Expert Tips on Caring for Baby Budgies

If you're breeding budgies, you will soon have a few chicks on your hands. Although the mother and father will do most of the work, there are a few things you'll need to do also. Here are a few tips on caring for baby budgies.

Development

It's important that you check on the chicks everyday. They may experience development problems which can be fixed if caught early. It's common for the little ones to get food stuck under their top mandible, or beak. The accumulation of food can cause an undershot beak, so you'll need to remove it with a toothpick or something.

Another common developmental problem is splayed legs. Since their bones are still forming, the problem can easily be corrected. To treat the problem, you will need to tie the chick's legs closely together. Also, mothers sometimes don't wash the baby's feet well enough. If droppings are allowed to accumulate and harden, it can hinder the little one's ability to move its toes. You will need to prevent this by washing them yourself.

Taming

Most owners want a tame budgie. If you plan on selling them, you'll need to keep this in mind. You can easily start taming baby budgies after they're two weeks old. Simply handle them carefully 10 minutes everyday. Two weeks after this, you can start handling them for longer than 10 minutes.

Light

If you'll be taming the chicks, you will need to take them out of the nestbox. Their nestbox is very dark inside. When you take them out, it's important that you shield their fragile eyes from the bright light. After they get a little older, you won't need to shield them from the light anymore.

These are a few tips on caring for baby budgies. To ensure the ideal health of your birds, it's important that you learn everything you can about proper budgie care. So, click here now to learn how to care for pet budgies properly.

How can I hand tame my baby budgies?
My budgie just layed an egg, she will be laying more. I know the whole breeding process because last year she layed 5 and 4 grew up to be beautiful budgies. One didn't hatch. The thing is that when the budgies were babies, we kept trying to tame them by playing with them as soon as thew were starting to grow feathers. But they still, now at almost a year old, are not tame. We try to but they are all so scared of us. We are just going to stop trying to and start with the new baby budgies. She layed an egg on July 8 but either the mom or our other female ate it. And the other one July 10(doing fine). What are some hints in starting to tame them? The mom and dad aren't tame so would they "teach" the babies to like not be near us? At what days old can we start holding them? When can i take them to another cage to start training them? Thanks in advance!

help with budgie/parakeets baby formula! please!?
hi guys! I am waiting for my baby budgies to be 3 weeks old or older and start hand taming them... what I want to know is like where I live the baby formula for birds doesnt exist so I would have to create my own and I wanted to know if this formula is ok for them to grow healthy and have a good immune system.. I would feed them every 4 hours 1 slice of bread that is wholesome bread or oatmeal bread, 1 boiled egg with shell and everything. 1 spoon of honey from bees 100% natural 1 or 2 spoons of milk with NO lactose because birds cant digest the lactose. 1 carrot 1 teaspoon of orange juice and and 1 teaspoon of millet mix it all together until it is a liquid and can come through the dropper and just give it to them in room temperature not too cold nor hot. I just wanted to know if that formula is ok for them at 3 weeks at that age taken them out of there nests and put in a nest box special for them and be in my room with me to handle and tame :D thanks!!
