Expert Tips for Breeding Budgies

Breeding budgies is a time-consuming but rewarding task. If you want to breed these birds, there are a few things you will need to know. Here are a few tips to make the experience a bit easier for you.

Age

Budgies reach sexual maturity quite early, usually between three and four months old. However, it's best not to start breeding them this early as it can cause problems down the road. Wait until both the male and the female are at least a year old before you allow them to mate. If you can get a pair that has already bonded, you find things will progress a bit faster.

Season

You should be aware that these birds aren't fertile throughout the year. If you're in the United States, you will need to breed them anywhere between October and March. This is the only time that they will mate. Around this time, you will start to notice them acting differently.

The birds will start tearing up the newspaper lining. They will also start feeding each other. Another common sign is tapping their beaks on their perches. The male may also start clicking his beak towards the female.

Lighting

Lighting is very important when breeding budgies. If you want to get them into condition for breeding, you need to provide at least 13 hours of lighting. This shouldn't be done all at once though. Instead, increase the lighting gradually over a few weeks up to 13 hours. Conversely, you should cover their cage at night to provide the necessary 12 hours of darkness.

These are a few tips on breeding budgies. To ensure the ideal health of your birds, it's important that you learn everything you can about proper budgie care. So, click here now to learn how to care for pet budgies properly.

HOW TO BREED BUDGIES?
I have two pairs of budgies. One pair is bonded (male (blue cere) feeds the female (brown, crusty cere)). The other pair not bonded. I added a nest box recently to the cage of the bonded pair of budgies. The female entered the nest box once or twice, but has since lost interest in the nest box. She still has a nutty brown cere, so she still is in breeding condition. The male also still has a smooth, royal-blue cere so he too is in breeding condition. I feed the birds on a budgie seed mix, millet and various fruits. I've added loads of fresh fruit and millet recently to condition the birds. Why won't the birds mate and lay eggs in the nest box?

African Grey tips please? Please read ??
I'm going to get one soon. I read up tons on them and read books, talk to owners, watch African Grey dvds, etc. I wonder if I missed out anything that is important. And this question is not answered: Can African Grey rip a finger of? How do you tell if it is going to do that? Please answer if you can. Can you share any cool experiences? :D And I do have experiences, I breed budgies and I have a Sun conure. I am ready to take the responsibility! Any good birds can be shared too. I'm going to keep this open. Thanks a lot!

Congo African Grey or Blue and Gold macaw?
Can you compare them? I've done SO MUCH research that I couldn't sleep! I can't really decide, I know how to care for one of course. This is the reason why I couldn't decide. Macaws are endangered so their cool but they can rip my finger of. I've had 1 Sun conure, 2 Cockatiel, 5 Lovebirds and I breed budgies so I am experienced hopefully :) Thanks SO MUCH!!!!
